Easy win for Tyrone over Down in Ulster MFC first round

The Red Hands had nine points to spare in Omagh.

Tyrone 1-18

Down 2-6

TYRONE RAN OUT comfortable nine-point winners over Down in their Electric Ireland Ulster Minor Football Championship clash in Omagh today.

Captain Conor McKenna opened the scoring with an early free as the home side dominated the opening exchanges, racing into an 0-8 to 0-1 lead with Lee Brennan doing the majority of damage for Tyrone.

Their lead was up to 11 points at the break, a goal from corner-forward Fintan McClure sending them into half-time on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-3.

That lead had stretched to 15 points by the time Ryan Treanor pointed Down’s fourth score of the game. Soon after, the visitors gave themselves the briefest glimmer of hope in terms of mounting a comeback when Tiernan Rushe scored their first goal of the game from the penalty spot.

However, it was too little, too late for Down and their second goal of the game in injury time – through Stephen McConville – was little more than a consolation.

Scorers for Tyrone: F McClure 1-1, L Brennan 0-4 (3f), C McKenna 0-3 (2f), E McGarrity, M Quinn, P McAnenly 0-2 each, C McLernon 0-1 (1f) R Nugent, J Darcy and J Lafferty 0-1 each.
Scorers for Down: T Rushe 1-0 (pen), S McConville 1-0, R Treanor 0-3 (1f), K McEvoy 0-1 (1f), J McGuinness and F Aiken 0-1 each.
